On their latest SEC filings, 364 US mutual funds, ETFs and closed-end funds held shares of 288 private companies held by two funds or more, worth $50.3 billion in all, as the funds value them. The most widely held is Anthropic: 110 funds, $15.8 billion.

How are these holdings found?
A holding is a fund's common or preferred share of a company that is not listed: valued with unobservable inputs (fair value level 3) and placed privately (a restricted security, or PP in its title), never a right left from a takeover, an escrow, or a vehicle that holds such shares. A company that funds hold as a listed share in the same data set is public and left out. Rows are joined into a company by its name, its share class and legal form cut off. Each fund values its shares itself, every quarter, so two funds can value one share differently.
The holdings are each fund's latest public Form N-PORT, which a fund files for the last month of each of its fiscal quarters and the SEC publishes 60 days later. A company's page lists every fund holding it, the value and the number of shares it reported, the value per share that gives, and the security as the fund titled it, with a link to the filing on EDGAR.
Use this data
The list is private-companies.json and, one row a company, private-companies.csv. Each company's file, /api/v1/private-companies/{slug}.json, lists every holder with its filing and the company's history by quarter since 2019. Free with credit under CC BY 4.0, like the rest of the API.
