An ETF's category is computed every night from its own latest file, never read from a data vendor, and each ETF's file carries the rule that placed it with the figures it measured. Open any fund's JSON file and its category block says, for example, how much of its stocks are US companies, where they sit by size and how far their style is from the market's.

How many of the US-listed ETFs each group holds, and what they cost, is on US ETFs in numbers.

How an ETF's category is set

  1. A trust or commodity pool is placed by what its own SEC filing says it holds: a metal, a crypto asset, a currency, or futures on a commodity or on volatility, with the multiple it targets.
  2. An ETF with swaps, futures or options in its filing is placed by them first. Net exposure of 115% of net assets or more makes it leveraged, -40% or less inverse; written calls or puts make it option income; purchased puts with written calls and puts make it a buffer; purchased puts or calls that limit losses make it hedged; otherwise the asset its contracts are on decides.
  3. A fund of funds whose ETFs are option strategies, crypto assets, commodities, bonds, leveraged and inverse and alternatives takes the category that 80% of the ETFs it holds share, when they share one. An ETF of stock ETFs is read through to their stocks.
  4. A bond ETF is placed by the kind of debt that dominates (Treasury, corporate, municipal, mortgage, loans, CLO), the country of its borrowers, and its duration from the filing: under 1 year, 1 to 3.5, 3.5 to 7.5, or over 7.5 years. A corporate ETF whose average coupon is 5.75% or more is high yield.
  5. A stock ETF is read in this order: preferred shares; gold and silver miners; a country or region outside the US holding 75% of its stocks with a known country (90% for Asia as a whole); one sector holding 60% of the stocks whose sector is known and 45% or more of all its stocks (energy and materials count together in an ETF whose name names a natural resource); energy and materials together on the same two lines; a theme its name names (solar, clean energy, batteries, uranium and lithium) in an ETF of fewer than 200 companies when no sector reaches those lines; two sectors holding 80% in fewer than 200 companies; and then where its companies are. 75% or more in the US makes it a US ETF (85% for an ETF whose name says global or international), 20% or less international, half or more of the rest in emerging markets an emerging markets ETF, anything between global.
  6. Size is the average place of its stocks in their market, weighted by holding: the share of the market's value in larger companies, from the US and the international total market ETFs' own weights. Up to 78% is large, 78% to 94% mid, over 94% small. An ETF with fewer than 50% of its stocks ranked by size is counted large.
  7. Style is the share of its stocks' value that growth index funds hold rather than value index funds, from the style index funds' own weights, compared with the share they hold of companies of the same sizes across the whole market: 10 points or more above is growth, 10 or more below is value, anything between blend. An ETF with fewer than 50% of its stocks given a style takes the style its name says, growth or value, and is otherwise counted blend.
  8. A company's sector and country are the ones every ETF's breakdown gives it (how they are set): the sector the sector funds that hold it vote for, else the sector of its SEC industry code; the country a single-country index fund places it in, else the market it is listed on, else the country of its SEC filings. A measure is taken only when it covers 50% or more of the ETF's stocks; below that, a sector or a theme the ETF's name names decides.
  9. The name in the ETF's filing decides what the file cannot show: a strategy whose options or swaps the file leaves out, an ETF whose file holds only cash and Treasuries, a sector or theme or a style the measures above cannot set, and, within 2.5 points of a line, which side of it the ETF is on. An ETF with no holdings file yet is placed by its name and the objective its prospectus states.
  10. The night before decides the side of a line a measure sits within 2.5 points of, when the name does not: the ETF keeps the side its category was on the night before. Within 2.5 points of the line of a sector, a theme or natural resources, an ETF whose name and category of the night before say neither is not counted in it. Past 2.5 points the measure alone decides, and each ETF's rule says when the name or the night before did.

The reference maps are rebuilt every night from the ETFs the site reads: 7,078 companies placed in a sector by 115 sector funds and the SEC industry codes, 11,646 ranked by size in VTI and VXUS, and 3,656 given a style by 10 pairs of growth and value index funds. 46 single-country index funds place companies in their country.

Until 9 October 2026 the site printed the category the market data gave for an ETF. These categories replaced it, and the category pages the site had then lead to the nearest one here.

Use the categories in code

  • funds.json gives every ETF's category as cat_id, its id, and c, its name: its label, except for the nine US size and style categories, whose name there is the one the lists gave them before 9 October 2026 (Large Blend for US Large Blend), so that programs written before then read them as they did.
  • Every ETF's file has a category block: id, label, group, asset_class, rule, the facets it measured (region, size, style, sector, duration, leverage) and the figures behind them.
  • /api/v1/screen?category=us-small-value lists the ETFs of one category, by id or label.
  • The MCP tool list_etfs gives the category and its id of each ETF it finds, and get_etf_holdings an ETF's category with the rule that set it.

Computed 2026-10-14 from each ETF's latest file; each ETF's file prints the date of the file its category was read from. How every figure here is produced. Measurements, not investment advice.
